About the Studio

Rusty Bug was founded In 2019 by glass artist Robyn Ochs and craftsman Bobby Gage. The 2400-square-foot, fully equipped glassblowing studio also features welding and woodworking facilities.

Robyn fell in love with hot glass in 2001 after visiting a small glass shop in the Detroit Metro area. She was hooked from the first moment she witnessed the furnace open for the gaffer to gather glass, felt the heat blasting out, and watched the glass wound up onto the pipe. Since then she’s worked with this hypnotizing molten material in its various forms through fusing, slumping and furnace work.

Robyn has studied at various small studios in Michigan, and has taken intensive classes through the Toledo Museum of Glass in Ohio, and Corning Museum of Glass in New York. In collaboration with Philip Yamron, Robyn co-founded PYRO Glass Studio in Mount Clemens, MI, which operated as a public studio and teaching facility from 2012 to 2017. Glassblowing is Robyn’s passion. It inspires and challenges her. There is no creative process that nourishes her soul more, and she is driven by a desire to share the beauty and wonder of glass with others.

Bobby has a background in welding and fabricating, and a newfound interest in woodworking. He creates one-of-a-kind live edge tables, and is experimenting with incorporating glass and metal into his designs. Initially drawn to glassblowing through a desire to craft the perfect beer or cocktail glass, he has since found himself captivated by its transformative qualities, and has developed a deep appreciation for the craft. Bobby is driven to learn as much as he can about glasswork, and he's grateful to have easy access to hot glass for his experimentation.

Robyn and Bobby invite you to delve into the profound beauty and artistry of glasswork by offering hands-on workshops, private parties, special events and studio rental opportunities for fellow glass artists.
